I have had a lot of people talk about summer time & how they are out of their routine & wondering about how to enjoy the good weather (if you’re based in Ireland & enjoying our extended heatwave) as well as how to fit in all the things to do at work as well as outside work. While some of the work is the stuff that might not be as exciting as the stuff outside of work, we want to make sure we’re making the best use of our time.
Follow these three tips to make the best use of your time:
- Know where your time is going right now:
Are you using your time in a way that you want to & do you understand where your time is going? Click here to download our time tracker to understand at a high level where your time is going. You can easily do this during the day or at the end of every day by taking a note of where you spent your time & consider whether that gave you the right results for the time you spent on something.
- What is inside your control to change about where your time is going:
If what we are spending our time on is within your control, you get to decide what you want to change about where your time is going. Do you want to start work earlier or finish work earlier? Some things will be outside of your control so really focus on the things that are within your control. For example – If I had to drive to work & it took me an hour & a half because I got stuck in traffic I can consider what’s within my control – while we can’t control the traffic, we can think of other options – maybe if I had left 20 minutes earlier or if I have the option to change around my schedule so that I could avoid the traffic altogether that will save me time in the long run. Really focus on the things that you have control to change within your day to day activities.
- Enjoy whatever you are doing at that time you are doing it:
If you’re taking a longer lunch break or aiming to start work earlier to finish work earlier to enjoy the sunshine or spend time with family, recognise that & enjoy the time you are spending on things. While you may have a little less time at work if you can leave a little earlier – how are you ensuring that you are getting the right priorities & all the important things completed at work while also enjoying your time outside of work. Focus on still making progress in work as well as enjoying time outside of work. Alot of people tell me they’re telling themselves – “I’m not getting enough done / I have more to do” – really consider whether that is 100% true.
Remember as you are focusing on this to be realistic for what you can achieve with the time you have available. There is always more to do & always more on our to-do list. Prioritise the most important things that you can get done. If you struggle with prioritising your time – set up a call here.
