Have you already figured out what you want to achieve in your career? How would you know you’ll feel satisfied with what you have achieved in your career? If you are someone who feels that other people might think you’re a success or other people may think it is a great job that you have but you don’t really feel satisfied in your career – know that that’s ok. Everyone is different; we’re all very individual & figuring out what you want & what is the right thing for you to do in order to feel satisfied & successful in your career is what’s important.

Try this exercise called The Retirement Speech – think ahead to how ever many years down the line to when you will be retiring. You are at your retirement party – think of the party atmosphere; all the people that you want to be there are there; all the people you’ve worked with; all your family and your friends. They are all there listening to you talk about your career. Or if it feels overwhelming for you to think about speaking to a large group, then think about having a conversation with some of the people closest to you about your career. You are telling them about the different things that you have achieved in your career & the things you are really proud to have done.

When you’ve reached retirement, what would you like to be able to say about your career?

Write down all the things that you would like to achieve – it doesn’t matter if you don’t know how you’re going to get there or if you don’t think you could do it. If it’s something that you want to achieve in your career, write it down.  When you have it all written down….go away & revisit it a second or third time & ask yourself “Is that something that I really want to do?” “Is that something that I want in my career?” Do I want it enough to go for it?

For example, maybe it’s “I want to be known as the person who’s an expert at tax accounting.” If I’m presenting at the association for tax accounting & I’m the person speaking about it that is how I will know I am known as someone who’s an expert at tax accounting.  Is that is something that you really want – do you want it enough to work for it & go for it?

Sometimes when people do this exercise, they realise that what they have written down they don’t really want. If that’s you – that’s ok, you can cross it out.

If you think about getting to a point where you are stepping back fully from your career, and you have no idea what you want to achieve, start looking around you at friends; family; work colleagues – is there anything in their roles that you would enjoy? What are the options that you would like to consider & then by a process of elimination hone in on what the right things are for you. You can do any of these things – what you want to get clear on is what is it that you really want to go after?  Then you can focus on how you close the gap from where you are now to where you want to get to.
